New talks for Sanderstead Literary Society
Sanderstead Literary and Debating Society, as it was originally known, was formed by members of Sanderstead Congregational Church in 1934, and soon attracted a large membership.
Meetings concerned with literature carried on throughout the 1939-45 war, but debates organised by the Society were discontinued.
The format of the Society’s meetings has evolved over the post-war years, and they now consist of presentations on a wide variety of subjects. In 2000 the society was renamed Sanderstead Literary Society.
The meetings take place on alternate Wednesdays, we have 12 talks from October to March.
Recent highlights have included lectures on The Red Arrows, Conspiracy Theories and The Royal Opera House, as well as dramatised presentations about Winston Churchill and Henry VIII.
The 2020-21 season was suspended due to Covid-19 but the 2021-22 season is now up and running.
Meetings are held in Sanderstead United Reformed Church Hall, 3 Sanderstead Hill, South Croydon, CR2 0HB, starting at 8pm and finishing at about 9pm.
Visitor’s admission costs £7 per evening, under 18’s are charged £2.50. Half-season membership costs £12.50, under 18’s are charged £5.00.
