Explore Croydon's historic town centre with new self-guided walks
Two new self-guided heritage walks in Croydon town centre showcase some of the area’s historic buildings and the stories behind them.
Discover all that is great about our borough and explore the town centre history, from grand buildings to magical gardens. It’s brilliant way to learn the fascinating stories behind some of our most iconic buildings.
The Market Town walk stretches from St Michael and All Angels church in West Croydon to the Pumping Station at Park Hill, it explores some of the impressive historic buildings, and, of course one of London’s oldest markets – Surrey Street – which started in 1275.
The Old Town walk explores some of the oldest surviving buildings in the area, the grounds of Croydon Minster and the memorial garden. These provide an extraordinary connection with Croydon’s early history, the Archbishops, and the people who once lived here.
Both walks take about 45 minutes. The maps come with detailed routes, pictures and interesting descriptions of the locations featured. If you’re heading to the shops or Surrey Street market, why not check out the walks and enjoy an hour out of your day to be reminded of our town's history and heritage.
For a while, colourful stickers will also lead the trails through Croydon Old Town. So you can follow the walk directly without maps.
There's also an online interactive map if you want to follow along on your device or desktop computer.
Find out more about the walks and download the free PDF versions of the maps for reading on the go or for printing at home at https://www.croydon.gov.uk/
