Over 50 young people secure jobs on the spot in Croydon

More than 150 jobseekers attended a recent jobs fair in Croydon with 55 offered a job on the spot.

Organised by the DWP at the Croydon Centrale Shopping Centre on 24th of February, the event brought together 20 employers offering vacancies across several sectors, including in the key industries of hospitality, digital marketing, logistics and sales. Roles on offer included Commis Chefs, Computer Programmers, Delivery Drivers and Graphic Designers.

The jobs fair hosted many leading companies, such as: Humble and Grape, Carrington Blake, Prestige Cars, The Gym Group, LLC (London Learning Consortium) and Superdrug.

Rapidly filling vacancies plays an important part in the recently launched DWP Way to Work campaign, which focuses on working in partnership with local employers to fill the record high number of vacancies with job-ready people allowing them to forge a fulfilling career.

Targeted predominantly at those claiming Universal Credit, the campaign supports getting people back into work faster than ever before, and jobs fairs play a key role in delivery. Events like these short-circuit the recruitment process by bringing jobseekers face to face with employers, helping fill jobs faster.

Minister for Employment, Mims Davies MP said:

“Work is the best way for people to get on, to improve their lives and to support their families.

We are determined to connect job ready people with local opportunities and this jobs fair in Croydon is a fantastic example, with 55 young people getting jobs offers on the spot.

“Jobcentres across the country are ramping up support via our dedicated Work Coaches to push to get half a million people into new jobs by the end of June, as part of our Way to Work campaign.”

Omobola Odutayo, Recruitment and Events Coordinator for London and Essex said:

“The jobs fair in Croydon was a fantastic success and gave those looking for work the chance to speak to prospective employers in person, with many landing job offers there and then.

“It’s important that everyone has the chance to find a good job, and stay in long term employment and we want people to know we’re there for them as we build back from the pandemic.”
